Still to be avoided – until tomorrow?

Enquiries of Cllr Cambridge have revealed that the work should be completed on Friday. And someone saw someone working on the site this afternoon. As feared TfL is a law unto itself; they did not require permission to cause gridlock on the South Circular. And local councillors were not even given prior warning to pass on.

Who bears political responsibility for this is unclear. We can’t blame everything on the Mayor!

Still to be avoided

Avoid

Posted on August 19, 2025 by Richard AH White

Road works at the Sheen Lane Upper Richmond Road junction. Four way lights which are confusing and delaying. The pavements are dug up to expose pipes.

Still no indication of when the work will be completed.

And of course still no-one actually working there! Or 4pm and they had all gone home. This is run by TFL (though no details are to be found on their works website), so the South Circular could be gridlocked for days.

Stag Brewery What Next : Update

The text below was published in EastSheenMatters on Tuesday 12 August 2025. Bold now added.

“So it is August and Mortlake and East Sheen may resemble a deserted Parisian suburb. But it’s more than three months since we received the Inspector’s decision granting planning permission for the residential development at the Stag Brewery and for the adjacent secondary school.

“We have known for nine months or more that the school would be dependent on central government funding. Who knew that it would take so long for a decision to be taken?

“Are there secret discussions going on about what might happen with this important site.”

Well, unbeknown to EastSheenMatters, there were discussions ongoing. A report on those discussions can now be seen on the Mortlake Brewery Community Group website at https://www.mbcg.org.uk/not-quite-yet/ .

“Is there any strategic thinking being conducted on housing needs, including affordable housing, and transport. If there is, no-one is saying anything or consulting locally.” As far as we are aware the recent discussions did not involve the Council.

“From the residential viewpoint one would hope this would include thinking on the Homebase site in Manor, which seems to have stalled; the Barnes Hospital site, where in spite of opening ceremonies, we are still waiting for diggers rather than spades; and occupancy at the Teddington Riverside development.

“Meanwhile rumours abound locally that the financial power brokers in Singapore are not entirely happy with the current position in Mortlake.

“Mortlake residents are doing well to get on with their own discussions about what projects to promote in their area.”

We do now know that discussions are being held with a third party who are interested in buying the whole site. A joint venture may also be explored.

All of the tenants on the site, save for Story Works, the filming company, have been served notice and will no longer be on site shortly. Their continuing use of the site may depend on whether Disney commission further episodes of A Thousand Blows.

A decision on how to proceed will be taken by early 2026, given the need to attend to the planning conditions. No work is expected on the site for about 18 months.

All are still waiting to hear whether the funding for the Livingstone Secondary School will be agreed or not by the DfE. The outcome of their review of funding is now expected in the Autumn. No mention is made of a move for Thomson House School, though it is known that they have recently had discussions with the DfE.

Smelling a Rat in Mortlake

Is it true? We wonder if it should be if it was with the view of ascertaining the exact state of the Thames around Mortlake? The government have sent out a smelling expedition for which service none but the sharpest nosed MPs were allowed to volunteer.

We are always anxious to avoid a statement, so we should be glad if we are wrong to be officially corrected. But we have heard that because of the perils of the trip, it was agreed that only the unmarried members should be suffered to embark on it less widowhood resulted.

We understand moreover to give the sniffers ample time for making their experiments, a government express boat was chartered for the voyage as being the slowest craft in use and shortest to breakdown. No member was allowed on board who had not made his will. An experienced core of surgeons were commissioned to attend in order to prevent loss of life if possible. All kinds of brandy and all kinds of antidotes were abundantly provided.

The nauseating nature of the service being known, arrangements were made for the comfort of the sick and every medical appliance to relieve them was in readiness. There was a liberal supply of hand basins and every member was allowed a steward to himself to prevent the fruitless bellowing and howling for that officer.

Barnes Bridge Rail Maintenance

Network Rail is warning passengers of significant disruption later this month as the railway line between Kew Bridge and Barnes will close for ‘essential maintenance’ works on Barnes Bridge.

During the closure, South Western Railway services will not run between Kew Bridge and Barnes, with replacement buses operating on affected routes.

In addition, for safety reasons, the pedestrian footbridge beside Barnes railway bridge will be closed from 10pm to 6am from 2 August to 6 September while engineers are on site.

When is the work taking place?

Network Rail teams have already begun work on Barnes Bridge. The main construction work on both bridges will take place during an 8-day closure of the line between Barnes and Feltham via Hounslow, from 23 to 31 August 2025. Following the line closure any remaining work will be completed in mid – September.
