THE STAG BREWERY PLANNING INQUIRY : STREAMING

Richmond Council has decided that the Planning Inquiry, which starts at the Exchange in Twickenham at 930am on Wednesday 29 May 2024, will not be streamed. That will make it less accessible to the Mortlake and East Sheen community. Open government?

What will the Planning Inspector think of that?

Of course it needs to be streamed. There is huge local interest and we cannot all get along tot he hearing, and I doubt we will be able to hear properly unless the hearing is projected by good speakers. The Council who I gather makes these decisions is showing this end of the borough scant respect.

I no longer have any idea what is being proposed nor do trust the council to take any notice of public opinion on this.

    • You have to read the 61 proofs of evidence plus approximately 380 ‘core documents’ with which the Council and the developers have flooded us but in short they want to build 1075 residential units and other useful additions such as a cinema plus a three-storey building to provide a new technology secondary school with sixth form.

Meanwhile Achieving for Children are asking schools to join a consultation on a ‘falling roll fund’, because the number of students attending primary (and thus secondary) schools in the borough is falling.

That’s disappointing but presumably not unexpected. Will there be a recording or transcript available regularly? Does this mean LBRUT own the process if they can make such a decision? Does it stop a citizen journalist live streaming it?

  4. An appeal has been made to the Inspector to reverse that decision. He ‘owns’ the process, so it will be interesting to see what happens. The Council manages to live stream its committee meetings (like last nights on the Barnes Hospital development). But perhaps it does not want more than a roomful of people watching its witnesses give evidence.

I am really surprised it will not be streamed – I was expecting to be viewing  tracts of the enquiry at home !-Do you know when you and Tim are presenting yet ?

    • I think we will need to be at the Exchange in Twickenham before 930 for a prompt start to find out what is happening. We are minor plays who the Council would certainly like to disappear. What I will be interested to see is whether there will be many people around to demonstrate local feeling. Not easy from Mortlake to Twickenham at that time of the morning. There may not be enough room on the trains. A foretaste of things to come!
