Viola da Gamba: What’s that?

The first of the Christ Church summer lunchtime recitals takes place next week on Wednesday 3 June at 12 noon,

Timothy Lin plays the Viola da Gamba. It is a bowed, fretted instrument played da gamba, that is ‘on the leg’. It has six or seven strings, as distinct from the cello which has four. It was popular during the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Timothy previously performed at Christ Church at a Wednesday lunchtime concert in November 2025. ‘Returns by popular demand’!

Timothy says the Viola da Gamba is NOT an ancestor of the modern cello, contrary to previous reports. It is closer to a guitar.

This concert is free. Donations welcome.

19 November 2025

And of course Friday evening 5 June at 7pm will see the first of the evening recitals. Local resident Lulu Ash will be singing with Dave Mason on the guitar.
