Richmond Park Cyclists have restarted their campaign to end vehicular access to the Park, pressing the Park Agency to introduce a ban, save to car parks. Their website states that they represent all types of cyclists and para-cyclists who use Richmond Park.
“Our aim is to make London’s number one free cycling resource an even better place to ride your bike. We are committed to ending the park’s use as a shortcut route for motorists so its roads can become a more welcoming place for every kind of cyclist and other visitors. To achieve our goals, we engage in dialogue with The Royal Parks (the body in charge of Richmond Park), the Metropolitan Police, cycling advocacy groups, cycling clubs, local politicians and key stakeholder groups. We are the only cycling organisation that has regular scheduled meetings with the park’s management.”
This really is quite extraordinarlily selfish. Yet again they are seeking to create a velodrome around which they can speed. The elderly, less able and families with children get not a word of consideration, unless they are on a bike.

You are absolutely right. They want the Park to be a velodrome, which it’s not (thank you Boris Johnson) and they are aggressive, rude and selfish. The 2omph speed limit should be enforced. I hate their assumption that they can ignore the rules.

It’s a pity you’ve misunderstood this. Removing through traffic from the park makes it safer and more welcoming for all visitors, including those who choose to drive. The ask is not to ban all access to motor vehicles. Instead it is to prevent the park being used as a rat run to avoid the designated A and B roads.

Regrettably that is not the way their website reads, nor the way other subscribers have interpreted it. If Tim is right then Richmond Park Cyclists should publish a clear statement of what they are seeking to do and how the interests on non-cyclists would be protected.

Good evening Richard,
I fully agree with your last paragraph.
What’s the best way in your opinion to stop this campaign?

Local interest groups and residents need to work together. A public meeting addressed by the Park Superintendent would go some way to putting a stop to the designs that Richmond Park Cyclists appear to have for the Park and raise regularly, no doubt at their ‘regularly scheduled meetings’. The Royal Parks Agency could put a stop to the anxiety caused by this campaigning with a clear statement that they have no intention of implementing such a plan, now or in the foreseeable future.
