  8. Zipcar stopped taking new UK bookings after 31 December 2025, after a year in which they lost about a pound on every four it brought in. They used to have several cars in rented car-club bays in East Sheen, but some car club cars remain.

Enterprise Car Club pays Richmond Council to use a couple of bays as well including a van in Leinster Avenue SW14. Their nearest car is near Kew Gardens Station.

Hiyacar lists a handful of cars around East Sheen, including two of mine, in Avenue Gardens and another next to Hertford Avenue allotments. Hiyacar normally uses its QuickStart keyless system so most cars can be opened from the app, but this went into limbo when they switched away from their old hardware on the day Zipcar stopped taking bookings and they are now planning a new box for most cars when the man with the screwdriver and the connectors gets-around to them all.

Turo is another car‑sharing marketplace and is more low‑tech. Prices are shown per day and most hosts still hand over a key in person rather than using any remote unlock system. At the time of writing there is a small Vauxhall hatchback available in Richmond and a Fiat 500 near Barnes Station.

Long‑time East Sheen residents will remember Quinn Motors, and Charles Quinn, who turned it into a Thrifty car and van hire franchise. After he sold the site, Practical took it on, then closed, and the building is now a vet, but Charles is still trading. An A‑board often appears near Mortlake station and sometimes outside his wife’s shop, Isabella Flowers at 203 Upper Richmond Road West, saying “call Charles on 0208 876 8888” for Thrifty vans and cars delivered.

    Hi Richard,

We were wondering if there was a possibility of adding a post about our garage Benjamin at Grosvenor Garage , moving back to the area. We closed down on Fitzgerald Avenue at the end of 2023 as the site was sold for development, and have finally re- opened in Barnes, 42-44 Arundel Terrace, three weeks ago. It would be great to get the word out.
Let me know , Sophie Spriggs-Coe
