Community Bluescapes

Community BlueScapes is funded through the Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. It is a six year project from April 2021 to March 2027. Regrettably it is not being renewed, although there is lots of work still to do.

Defra will not provide further funding, so the project board are on the lookout for alternative funding. They are working closely with the Beverley Brook Catchment Partnership to capture evidence of the work so far, the strength of the partnership, and to seek Expressions Of Interest for potential future funding.

The end-programme reporting will present both everything that has been learned and done, and also the opportunities that have not been progressed, or that have identified throughout the project.

If funding to continue Community BlueScapes as a partnership cannot be found, the lessons learned and future project opportunities will be absorbed into ongoing work at each of the partner organisations (Richmond Council, Barnes Common Ltd and WWT), with alternative funding sources to be applied for (e.g. funding from Thames Water, Greater London Authority, Lottery etc).

Project Leader Lizzie Bunker is continuing at Richmond and Wandsworth councils as Lead Local Flood Authority Manager, so she will be ensuring that future Community BlueScapes opportunities are retained in the pipeline of projects.

East Sheen Halloween

East Sheen’s Spooktacular Halloween Hunt Returns This October

Families are invited to enjoy a frightfully fun day out as the East Sheen Halloween Hunt returns on Saturday 24 October 2026. One of the borough’s most popular annual community events, the hunt brings together local businesses and families for some serious Halloween-themed fun.

The adventure begins at the Hare & Hounds on Upper Richmond Road West, where participants collect their Halloween Hunt Map before setting off on a spooky journey around East Sheen’s shops.

Along the way, children will collect letters from participating businesses, enjoy plenty of Halloween treats, and fill their bags with goodies. Once they’ve uncovered the secret phrase, they’ll return to the Hare & Hounds to claim a prize. There will also be extra activities to enjoy throughout the day, including face painting, spooky visitors and more.

“There’s always such a fantastic atmosphere on the day,” said Will Pritchard, Manager of the Hare & Hounds. “The East Sheen Halloween Hunt is a wonderful way to bring the community together, encourage families to explore our brilliant local businesses and create some fun Halloween memories. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back again.”

There will be two different Halloween Hunt times:

·       10am to 12pm

·       1pm to 3pm

Families and groups should book the same time slot to ensure they can complete the hunt together. Tickets are on sale now from https://www.designmynight.com/london/pubs/south-london/the-hare-hounds/halloween-hunt-2026

The Fixery at Grove Gardens Chapel

A bright idea promoted by Richmond Council and Habitats and Heritage. The central concept is to make sustainability accessible and affordable. A circular economy!

It provides an excellent opportunity to repurpose an old chapel, which has to be maintained. It was consecrated in 1877 and is adjacent to Richmond Old Burial Ground. It has been disused since the 1960s and was declared redundant in 1996. The Diocese of Southwark has since granted a lease to Habitats and Heritage.

The Fixery was established in March 2026 and is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 4pm.

Some parking is available nearby but from East Sheen there is a pleasant twenty minute walk through Sheen Common and the East Sheen and Richmond Burial Grounds.

Colin and Tim have repaired a toaster. Tim also repairs cycles.

This beautiful mosaic depicts the Annunciation. It was designed by Daniel Bell and probably constructed in 1877.

Habitats and Heritage are always looking for volunteers!

Visiting Richmond Park

The Deer are on the job and being noisy. Bellowing to be heard – probably more from the Red Deer! And those big fellas will be protecting their hinds. There has already been one report of a walker with a dog having to beat a hasty retreat.

Most important DO NOT APPROACH. Of course all you readers here will know that. But it must be worth warning the many visitors too.

Consequent on the demise of the Parks Police it is also being reported that more commercial vehicles are seen driving up Sawyers Hill. some even taking a short cut to Kingston Gate via the road past the Royal Ballet School, and of course more ebikes.

Perhaps a better form of transport.

Air Raid Shelter: near Mortlake Station: Sunday 13 September 2026

Annual Open House Day at the Air Raid Shelter, St Leonards Court via St. Leonards Road and Palmers Road London SW14 7NG

The annual opening of the Air Raid Shelter to the public will take place on Sunday 13 Septmeber 2026 from 1pm to 5pm. Free entry. It is organised by the Mortlake with East Sheen Society (MESS).

Do come – and bring your friends.

The shelter is to the right of the photo beneath the grass area. The entrance is in the tower at the top right hand corner.

The shelter is down thirteen steps, so take care and hold on to the rail. The guide will have a large torch!

Since 2015 MESS has opened the shelter on Open House Day every September.   The shelter cannot receive more than 15 visitors at a time and each visit takes 10 minutes, so we may have a queue of visitors awaiting their turn. While they wait, they are entertained with discussion of the site and maps of bombsites in the area.

In the last few years MESS has had tourists coming from the USA and various countries in Europe.

MESS also opens the shelter to local schools by appointment. See mess.org.uk
